Skupinu původně tvořili Francis Rossi (zpěv, kytara), Alan Lancaster (baskytara), Rick Parfitt (zpěv, kytara) a John Coghlan (bicí). Jejich původní jméno bylo "The Spectres" a později "Traffic Jam", než se konečně stali v roce 1967 Status Quo. Skupina je známá svým charakteristickým stylem zvaným "boogie rock" nebo "quo-rock," což je kombinace rocku, boogie a blues. Skupina získala popularitu svými energickými živými vystoupeními a jednoduchými, ale chytlavými písněmi.
